Project 5 Still Life: Dig the Stillness

Shoot a still life in class and out of class.  Your still life must contain objects, but can be pretty much anything.  

You must use turn in least  3 images of strobe lighting in the studio, another 3 of continious lighting and 3 of natural light at home for a total of at least 9 images.  The 9 images must of the same style and/or theme and/or object.   

You may use people in your still life as long as you think of them purely as objects.  Not as people with a soul or personality.  They must appear obviousily placed in a seen, still, and unmoving.  

When is it due? 

We will look at images as a class at the start of class Tuesday October 31st.  

Things to think about

Spend the first couple days collecting objects to photograph, but also backdrops and small lights and anything else.  Get a cardboard box and just start filling it with stuff.  We will start doing some studio lighting demos after the conference.  

Consider objects to photograph, obviousily.  But also consider the way you light them, using mirrors, filters, you own backdrops, additional lights.  The lights and color will mean more to your success than anything else.  

In your photo, your object does not need to represent what it is in real life.  Consider it purely formally. Please try to refrain from anything with obvious logos or text.   

Tripods, use them

you don’t need a studio or a fancy location to make a start with still life photography. You can begin by simply using a space at home, such as a table placed by a window, along with a simple backdrop and utilizing a couple of lamps. Consider large sheets of white to act as light reflectors. 

Consider any of these choices for a good still life image

  • Objects to include
  • Sizes, shapes, numbers, colours
  • Spacing / overlapping
  • Arrangement
  • Surface
  • Background
  • Viewpoint
  • Focal length
  • Depth of field
  • Framing – as in composition inclusion/exclusion
  • Framing – as in a containing device in the picture itself
  • Format ratio
  • Lighting
  • Narrative intent
  • Symbolism
